How to use coachmarks

Coachmarks are contextual visual cues that guide users through features, onboarding, or new functionalities within Productboard. When used correctly, they enhance user understanding and engagement without causing frustration.

Best Practices:

  1. Use sparingly and strategically
  • Limit coachmarks to essential highlights or onboarding steps.
  • Avoid overwhelming users with too many prompts at once.
  1. Be clear and concise
  • Keep instructions short, direct, and easy to understand.
  • Focus on one key point per coachmark to prevent confusion.
  1. Make them contextual
  • Trigger coachmarks only when relevant (e.g., first time a feature appears, or during specific tasks).
  • Ensure they appear in the appropriate stage of user flow
  1. Allow for easy dismissal or skipping
  • Include clear options to close, skip, or dismiss coachmarks.
  • Avoid forcing users to interact with every coachmark.
  1. Provide a path to more help
  • Link to further instructions or support if needed, especially for complex features (‘learn more’ links).
